Did Jesus exist only as a plan?

The article critically examines the Iglesia Ni Cristo’s teaching that Jesus Christ did not pre-exist but was merely part of God’s plan, often using this belief to interpret biblical passages like John 1:1. The author argues that this interpretation is flawed, as it diminishes the unique significance of Jesus by equating Him to all other things within God’s sovereign plan. The essay challenges the INC’s perspective by emphasizing God’s omniscience, asserting that God’s plan cannot be chronological or logical in a human sense. It concludes that Jesus has always existed, co-eternally with the Father, and that the INC’s doctrinal position contradicts key biblical teachings about the nature of Christ and God’s omniscience.

The statement “God did not plan Jesus” is problematic because it denies a foundational biblical truth that Jesus’ coming as the Savior was foreknown and predestined by God. The Bible is clear that God’s plan for salvation, including the role of Jesus, was established before the creation of the world.

1 Peter 1:20 (ESV) states that Jesus “was foreknown before the foundation of the world.”

Revelation 13:8 describes Jesus as the “Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”

Acts 2:23 (ESV) speaks of Jesus being “delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God.”

The article argues that since God is omniscient and does not plan things in a chronological sense, the idea of Jesus as God’s first plan is incorrect. However, God’s omniscience does not negate the fact that Scripture repeatedly speaks of God’s definite plan and foreknowledge (Acts 2:23). While God is not bound by time, He still foreordains events within the framework of human history. Jesus’ central role in this plan is clearly laid out in the Bible. Saying that Jesus was not part of God’s plan contradicts clear biblical teaching about God’s eternal purpose for salvation.
